A household emergency plan should still work when a phone battery runs low or a network is disrupted. Polk County’s preparedness guidance recommends writing down key contacts, choosing an out-of-town contact and agreeing on meeting places before severe weather causes a disruption. The county’s June 12 guide remains available, and the Atlantic hurricane season continues through November 30. This is a preparedness reminder, not an announcement of an approaching storm.

Make the plan usable without a phone

The county recommends a written list of household contact details and a designated out-of-town person who can help family members reconnect. Discuss meeting locations inside the home, in the neighborhood, outside the neighborhood and outside the city, including when to meet. Keep the arrangements understandable to everyone who needs them.

The guidance also asks households to plan how they will check on relatives or neighbors who may need assistance. Discuss transportation and support needs with the people involved in advance. Keep private contact lists with the household; do not post personal addresses, medical information or phone numbers in public comments.

Find the county’s AlertPolk portal

The official guide links AlertPolk, whose overview was also reviewed November 7. It describes location-based notifications to home phones, cellphones or email addresses about public-safety situations, including severe weather, evacuation notices, boil-water orders and hurricane recovery. These are examples of notification categories, not active notices issued by this article.

AlertPolk says people can register a relevant location inside Polk County even if they do not live in the county, such as a workplace, school or seasonal home. It says alerts correspond to the registered address and warns that phone-carrier message or data charges may apply. Start from the county’s official link below, review the current registration and privacy terms, and provide information directly to the official service if you choose to enroll. This report did not register anyone or submit personal information.

Use more than one information channel

The county encourages multiple ways to receive emergency information, including official emergency-management updates, wireless emergency alerts and a battery-powered weather radio. A written communications plan helps when electronic access is limited; it does not replace instructions from emergency officials.

Potential shelter lists are planning resources. Polk explicitly says shelters are not automatically opened during every emergency and are activated as needed. Do not assume a listed building is open or travel there based on an old screenshot or this general guide. Verify current county instructions whenever an actual emergency occurs.
