What to know
The site at 4001 Bannon Island Road remains on its current hours and fee schedule until 3 p.m. December 31, 2026.

Residents who use the Northeast Landfill Customer Convenience Center in Haines City have until the end of this year to plan for a change. Polk County announced November 5 that the pilot drop-off program at 4001 Bannon Island Road will stop operating at year’s end. Its current hours and fee schedule remain in place until 3 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2026.

Where to take bulk items after the closure

Beginning January 1, 2027, the county directs residents bringing bulk items and tires to the North Central Transfer Station, 3131 K-Ville Avenue in Auburndale. The announcement does not say these drop-offs will be free. Before loading a vehicle, confirm the receiving facility’s hours, accepted materials and applicable fees.

Why the county is ending the pilot early

The pilot began June 1, 2026, with the goal of reducing illegal dumping and offering a more convenient disposal option in northeast Polk. According to the county’s announcement, commissioners voted unanimously to end it ahead of the projected one-year period, citing low residential use, operating costs and increased illegal dumping in the area.

What residents can do now

The closure is a future service change, not an immediate shutdown. Residents who normally use the Haines City site can use the remaining weeks to check their regular collection options and plan the route to Auburndale. Ask your collection provider about curbside bulk-item arrangements rather than assuming every household has the same service. Do not leave material outside a closed facility.

Check the county’s landfill and transfer-station information before traveling.
