Housing and Neighborhood Development: 863-534-5240 · HNDRequests@polkfl.gov · ask about the specific program before applying.

Polk County’s State Housing Initiatives Partnership program can support several different housing needs, but a funding announcement is not a guarantee that money is still available for a particular applicant. Residents considering assistance should start by identifying the relevant program and confirming its current status with Housing and Neighborhood Development.

What the county announced for 2026–27

In its May 26 announcement, the county said it received approximately $4.7 million in SHIP funds for the 2026–27 state fiscal year. The notice listed an application period beginning July 1, 2026 and ending June 30, 2027, or earlier if all funds are committed. We read that notice again November 5; we have not independently confirmed the remaining balance or whether every strategy is accepting applications.

Different strategies address different needs

The announcement identifies down-payment and closing-cost assistance for eligible homebuyers, demolition and reconstruction, rehabilitation of owner-occupied homes, and new construction or redevelopment for income-eligible buyers. Its estimate of 72 projects is a planning estimate, not a count of homes already completed.

The county’s current department page also identifies homebuyer education and other housing programs. Ask staff which program fits your situation rather than assuming that a home-repair program and a home-purchase program use the same criteria or application process.

Questions to ask before applying

Confirm whether the relevant program currently has funding, which income and property requirements apply, what documents are needed, and whether any assistance has repayment or other conditions. Do not make a purchase or repair commitment on the assumption that a grant has been approved. The county’s listed contact is 863-534-5240 or HNDRequests@polkfl.gov.
